Sit facing a window for even, shadow-free lighting. Avoid direct flash which creates harsh shadows and overexposure.
Use a phone stand or prop your phone against a stack of books. This keeps the camera level with your face and reduces blur.
Wear your normal everyday clothing. Uniforms (military, hospital) are generally not permitted unless you wear them daily for religious reasons.
Stand or sit at least 2 feet from the background wall to minimize shadows. The tool removes the background, but less shadow = cleaner result.
Look directly into the camera lens, not the screen. Relax your face muscles, close your mouth gently, and keep your eyes wide open.
Zoom in to 100% on the preview to check sharpness. Blurry photos are a common rejection reason and require a retake.
Follow these four steps to create a compliant US passport photo that passes State Department review.
Take or upload a photo with even lighting. Face should be centered, filling most of the frame. Use a plain wall or door as a background — the tool will remove it automatically.
Choose 'United States' from the country dropdown. The tool automatically sets the dimensions to 2×2 inches at 600 DPI and applies a white background compliant with State Department requirements.
The AI compliance checker flags any issues: face too small, shadows detected, head tilt, or improper expression. Fix any issues and regenerate instantly.
Download the print-ready JPEG. Print two identical 2×2" photos on photo paper. Both physical copies go with your DS-11 or DS-82 passport application form.

These are the most frequent reasons for passport photo rejection. Avoid them to ensure first-time acceptance.
The #1 cause of US passport photo rejection since the 2016 rule change. Any glasses — prescription, reading, or decorative — are prohibited.
Many home printers default to 4×6" or letter-size prints. The photo must be exactly 2×2". Use a template or the ProShoot tool which handles sizing automatically.
Shadows on the face or behind the head are a common rejection trigger. Use two light sources or sit facing a bright window for even, shadow-free lighting.
Photos older than 6 months are rejected. If you look significantly different from a recent photo (new beard, major weight change, surgery), retake the photo immediately.
Hats, baseball caps, and non-religious head coverings are not allowed. Religious coverings are permitted with a signed statement from a religious leader.
Passport photos must be printed on photo-quality paper. Plain inkjet printer paper is too thin and will be rejected at the counter.
