📋

Commencement required

An approved person (doctor, lawyer, teacher, accountant) must certify one photo by signing the back and stating it's a true likeness.

💡

Even lighting is key

Australia's checkers are strict about facial shadows. Use two light sources or face a bright window for perfectly even lighting.

📐

Head size range

Head must be 32–36mm — a 4mm tolerance. Our tool shows exactly where your head falls within the acceptable range.

🌏

Visa vs passport

Different visa types may have slightly different requirements. The 35×45mm format applies to most Australian passports and tourist visas.

🎨

Light plain means light

White or very light grey backgrounds are accepted. Mid-grey or coloured backgrounds will cause rejection. The AI sets the exact correct shade.

📨

Mail or in-person

For standard passport applications, submit two physical photos. Online passport renewals (for eligible Australians) may accept digital uploads.

How to Create Your Australia Passport Photo

Follow these steps to generate a compliant, print-ready Australia passport photo in minutes.

1

Photograph in good light

Stand against a white or light-coloured wall with even lighting. Avoid shadows behind you. Use a phone camera in portrait orientation at eye level.

2

Select Australia

Choose 'Australia' from the country list. The tool sets 35×45mm dimensions and applies a light plain background meeting Department of Home Affairs standards.

3

Run compliance check

The AI checks head size (32–36mm), eye openness, expression, and background cleanliness. Review and accept, then download your compliant photo.

4

Print and certify

Print two identical photos on photo paper. Have your commencement (certifier) sign the back of one photo: 'I certify that this is a true photograph of [full name]' with their signature, date, and occupation.

Australia Passport Photo FAQ

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about Australia passport photo requirements.

What size is an Australian passport photo?
Australian passport photos must be 35mm wide by 45mm tall. The head measured from chin to crown must be between 32mm and 36mm. Two identical photos are required and must be printed on photo-quality paper.
What background is required for Australian passport photos?
The background must be plain white or very light grey with no patterns, shadows, or color tints. A uniform light background is essential. The ProShoot tool automatically applies the correct light plain background.
Who can certify an Australian passport photo?
An approved certifier (commencement) must sign the back of one photo for standard applications. Approved certifiers include doctors, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, teachers, accountants, lawyers, police officers, bank officers, and other approved professions listed on the Department of Home Affairs website.
Can I wear glasses in an Australian passport photo?
No. Australian passport photos no longer permit glasses. This change aligned Australia with international ICAO standards. Remove all eyewear before taking your passport photo.
How old can an Australian passport photo be?
Australian passport photos must have been taken within the last 6 months and must accurately represent your current appearance. If your appearance has changed significantly, you should take a new photo even if your existing one is less than 6 months old.
Are glasses allowed in Australian passport photos in 2026?
No. Glasses are not permitted in Australian passport photos unless they cannot be removed for genuine medical reasons — and vision impairment alone is not acceptable. If glasses cannot be removed, a medical certificate is required and the frames must not obscure the eyes with no lens reflection.
What paper type is required for Australian passport photos in 2026?
Australian passport photos must be printed using dye sublimation on heavy-weight glossy paper (minimum 200 gsm). Standard inkjet or laser prints are not accepted. Photos must be colour — not black and white. Australia Post charges approximately $23.50 (from July 2026) for compliant passport photos at participating post offices.

6 Common Australia Passport Photo Mistakes

These are the most frequent reasons for passport photo rejection. Avoid them to ensure first-time acceptance.

Incomplete certification

The certifier must write the full statement ('I certify this is a true photograph of [full name]'), sign it, date it, and add their name, occupation, and phone number. Partial certification is not accepted.

⚠️

Wrong certifier

Not everyone can certify a passport photo. The certifier must be from an approved profession (doctor, lawyer, accountant, teacher, pharmacist, police officer). Family members and friends cannot certify unless they hold a qualifying professional position.

🚫

Shadows on background

Even subtle shadows behind the head cause rejection. Stand at least 2 feet from the background wall. Our tool removes backgrounds automatically for a clean result.

Head outside accepted range

The 32–36mm head size range is carefully verified. Photos where the subject stood too far from or too close to the camera fall outside this range.

🔴

Wearing glasses

All glasses are prohibited in Australian passport photos. This was updated in 2015 and strictly enforced. Remove all eyewear before photographing.

Printed at too low DPI

Low-resolution prints look blurry and are rejected. Use a 600 DPI setting when printing or use a professional photo printing service.
