Passport Seva portal

Complete your passport application at passportindia.gov.in. Book your PSK appointment online after submitting the application form with your photo.

👔

Clothing color matters

India specifically requires that you avoid white clothing — it blends into the white background. Wear any other light-colored shirt or top.

📋

4 physical copies

Unlike US/UK that need 2 photos, India requires 4 identical photos for PSK in-person submissions. Print them all at once for consistency.

💡

Pure white background

India is stricter than most: off-white, cream, or light grey backgrounds are not accepted. Only pure white. Our tool applies the exact required shade.

🕶️

No glasses at all

Since 2021, the Ministry of External Affairs prohibits all glasses in Indian passport photos including prescription, reading, and tinted lenses.

📱

10KB–1MB file size

The Passport Seva portal has a specific file size window. Photos must be JPEG between 10KB and 1MB. Our tool outputs the correct file size automatically.

How to Create Your India Passport Photo

Follow these steps to generate a compliant, print-ready India passport photo in minutes.

1

Take the photo

Stand against a plain white wall in good lighting. Wear light-colored clothing (not white) so you're visible against the white background. Look straight at the camera with a neutral expression.

2

Select India

Choose 'India' in the country selector. The tool sets exact 51×51mm dimensions with a pure white background as required by the Ministry of External Affairs.

3

Upload to Passport Seva

Download your compliant JPEG (ensure it's 10KB–1MB). Upload directly to the Passport Seva online portal during your application. Print 4 copies on photo paper for the PSK appointment.

4

Attend your PSK appointment

Bring all 4 printed photos to your Passport Seva Kendra appointment. Photos are verified against your uploaded digital copy. Matching is required to proceed.

India Passport Photo FAQ

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about India passport photo requirements.

What size is an Indian passport photo?
Indian passport photos are 51×51mm (2×2 inches). The head from chin to crown must be 25–35mm. Four identical physical photos are required for in-person PSK submissions. One digital JPEG (10KB–1MB) is uploaded to the Passport Seva portal.
What background is required for Indian passport photos?
Only plain white is accepted for Indian passport photos — not off-white, cream, or light grey. The background must be completely uniform with no shadows or patterns. The Ministry of External Affairs enforces this strictly.
What clothing should I wear for an Indian passport photo?
Wear any light-colored clothing except white. White shirts blend into the white background and can cause the photo to be rejected. Avoid very dark or black clothing as it may not scan well. Smart casual attire is recommended.
Can I wear glasses in an Indian passport photo?
No. Since 2021, glasses of any kind are not permitted in Indian passport photos. This includes prescription glasses, reading glasses, sunglasses, and photochromic lenses. Remove all eyewear before taking your photo.
How do I upload my passport photo to Passport Seva?
Go to passportindia.gov.in and start your application. During the application process, you'll be asked to upload a JPEG photo between 10KB and 1MB. Use the ProShoot tool to download a properly sized file, then upload it directly. Ensure the uploaded photo matches the physical copies you bring to your PSK appointment.
What changed with India's passport photo requirements under Passport Seva 2.0?
Effective September 1, 2025, Passport Seva 2.0 updated India's photo specifications to comply with ICAO biometric standards — now 35mm × 45mm. A plain white background is mandatory. The digital photo file must not exceed 100 KB with resolution between 350 and 1,000 pixels wide. The face height must be 25–35mm from chin to crown.
Do Indian passport photo requirements differ for applicants overseas?
Yes, some consulates abroad historically accepted 2×2 inch (51×51mm) photos. Under Passport Seva 2.0, the standard 35×45mm ICAO format is officially required across all channels. Always confirm with your specific consulate — the background (plain white) and expression requirements are uniform across all channels.

6 Common India Passport Photo Mistakes

These are the most frequent reasons for passport photo rejection. Avoid them to ensure first-time acceptance.

Wearing white clothing

With a white background, white clothing makes it impossible to distinguish your outline. India specifically notes this — wear any other light color.

⚠️

Wrong file size for portal

The Passport Seva portal accepts only 10KB–1MB JPEG files. Files that are too small (over-compressed) or too large are rejected by the system. Our tool outputs the correct size.

🚫

Not enough photos

India requires 4 physical photos for PSK appointments — not 2 like most countries. Print all 4 from the same session on the same day.

Glasses in the photo

Since 2021, all glasses are prohibited in Indian passport photos. This is a newer rule that some applicants are unaware of. Any glasses cause the application to be sent back.

🔴

Missing PSK appointment

Without a valid PSK appointment (booked at passportindia.gov.in), you cannot submit your application. Walk-ins are not accepted. Book 2–4 weeks in advance.

Digital and physical photo mismatch

The digital photo uploaded to the portal must match the physical photos brought to the PSK appointment. Different crops or lighting will cause a hold on your application.
