Do Photographers Provide Raw Files?

The Short Answer: Usually No

Most professional photographers do not include raw files in standard packages. Raw files are the unprocessed digital negative captured by the camera sensor — they require specialized software to view and contain the photographer's proprietary workflow settings. Delivering raws is the exception, not the rule.

Why Photographers Don't Give Out Raw Files

• Raw files show the 'unfinished' work before retouching and color grading
• They represent significant intellectual property — the photographer's editing decisions
• Clients without editing software (Lightroom, Capture One) cannot open them
• Delivering raws without editing would reflect poorly on the photographer's work
• Some clients misuse raws to get editing work done cheaply elsewhere

When Raw Files Are Available

Some photographers will sell raw files as an add-on, typically for 50–100% of the original package price. Commercial clients sometimes request raws for in-house editing purposes. If you need raws, discuss this before booking — not after.

What You Get Instead

Professional delivery is high-resolution JPEG files that are fully edited, color-graded, and retouched. These are the final, usable product and are exactly what you need for printing, sharing, and commercial use.

Should You Ask for Raw Files?

In most cases, no. Unless you have a specific technical reason (professional in-house retoucher, unusual licensing requirement), the edited JPEGs will serve every purpose. If you're unhappy with the editing style, the right fix is to hire a photographer whose style matches your vision before the shoot.
