Underwater photography requires either a waterproof camera (GoPro, Olympus Tough) or a surface camera in a waterproof housing. Housings range from $500 for basic systems to $5,000+ for professional dive housings with full port and strobe systems.

Light Underwater

Water absorbs light wavelengths selectively — red disappears beyond 5 meters in typical conditions, followed by orange and yellow, leaving progressively blue-dominant color at depth. This means underwater photography without artificial light produces unnaturally blue-green images. Professional underwater photographers use underwater strobes to restore color accuracy and create dramatic lighting that shows subjects as they actually appear.

White Balance and Color Correction

Shooting RAW underwater allows substantial post-processing color recovery. Custom white balance adjustments restore warm tones in shallow water photography. Below 5-10 meters, strobes are necessary for accurate color. Some photographers use red filters for deeper shooting without strobes to compensate for blue cast.

Buoyancy and Camera Stability

Controlling your underwater camera requires controlling your buoyancy — a photographer struggling with position cannot compose thoughtfully. Proper weighting, buoyancy compensator control, and non-disturbing swimming technique are prerequisites for quality underwater photography. Neutral buoyancy at a consistent depth while composing and shooting requires practice that comes only with regular diving experience.
