Product Photography on White Background
White background product photography is the foundation of e-commerce and catalog marketing. Here's how it's done professionally.
Why White Background Photography is E-Commerce Standard
Amazon, most major e-commerce retailers, and catalog publishers require pure white background product photography — often called packshot photography. The pure white background: eliminates visual competition with the product; creates consistent visual presentation across a catalog; enables easy background removal for digital compositing; and meets platform-specific requirements (Amazon requires the primary product image on a pure white background, no exceptions).
The Equipment Setup
Professional white background product photography requires: a lightbox or sweep setup (curved white acrylic or paper that eliminates the horizon line between floor and background); a lighting system that produces even illumination across the background (typically two softbox lights flanking the subject plus a background light); and a camera on a tripod for consistent framing. Professional lightboxes are available for $100-$500; DIY setups using white foam core and LED panels produce comparable results.
Achieving True White, Not Gray
The most common mistake in white background product photography: the background appears gray or off-white rather than pure white. This occurs when the background is underlit relative to the subject. Solution: over-light the background (background should be 1-1.5 stops brighter than the subject) so it blows out to pure white while the subject remains properly exposed. In post-processing, expand the background to pure white if needed.
Product Preparation
Product presentation matters enormously: ensure all products are clean (fingerprints and dust are magnified in close-up photography); press and steam fabric items; remove all price tags and stickers; charge batteries so screens are on for electronics; and arrange multi-component products in their most displayable configuration. Time spent on product preparation saves time in retouching.
Shot Types for E-Commerce
Standard e-commerce product shot set: hero front shot (primary listing image); additional angle shots (back, side, top); scale reference shot (product next to a hand or common object for size context); detail shots (specific features, texture, label); and for wearables, lifestyle shots showing the product in use. Amazon and other platforms specify required shot types for different product categories.
Post-Processing White Background Photography
Post-processing steps: white balance correction to neutral; exposure adjustment for consistent brightness; background expansion to pure RGB 255 (using levels or curves); color accuracy check against physical product; and retouching any imperfections visible at product scale. Batch processing with consistent settings across a product catalog is efficient for large volume orders.
