Newborn Photography Guide: Capturing the First Days of Life

A complete guide to professional newborn photography — when to book, what to expect during the session, safety considerations, and tips for beautiful newborn portraits.

The Golden Window for Newborn Photography

The optimal window for newborn photography is the first 5–14 days of life. During this period, newborns sleep more deeply and for longer stretches, making the deeply sleeping, curled poses that define the genre possible. After two weeks, newborns become increasingly alert and less cooperative for sleepy posed shots — not impossible, but more challenging. Book your newborn photographer during your second or third trimester, then confirm your delivery date with them so they can schedule your session within the ideal window.

Safety Is the Top Priority

Newborn photography poses look effortless in the final images but require significant safety expertise during capture. Poses like the "froggy" or "womb pose" are composite images — the parent's hands support the baby throughout and are removed in post-processing. Any photographer who attempts complex newborn poses without proper training risks serious injury to the infant. Always verify that your newborn photographer has specific newborn photography training and experience, not just general portrait photography experience.

What to Expect During the Session

A newborn photography session typically runs 2–4 hours — not because the photography takes that long, but because the session moves at the baby's pace. There will be feeding breaks, diaper changes, calming time, and waiting for the baby to fall into a deep sleep before transitioning between setups. This is completely normal and expected. Experienced newborn photographers are patient, calm, and expert at soothing newborns for the next setup. The temperature in the studio is often kept warmer than you might expect to keep the baby comfortable when partially unclothed.

Props and Styling

Most professional newborn photographers have an extensive prop collection: wraps, headbands, baskets, bowls, and small blankets. Many also offer "simple" sessions with minimal props for a cleaner, more timeless look. Discuss your preference beforehand. If you'd like to incorporate family heirlooms — a special blanket, a christening gown, the hospital bracelet — mention these during the booking process so the photographer can plan the session accordingly.

Family and Sibling Shots

Most newborn sessions include time for family and sibling portraits — the baby with parents, with each parent individually, with older siblings, and complete family shots. These are best done at the beginning of the session when the baby is freshest and family members are most patient. Coordinate sibling attendance with their school or daycare schedule to arrive at the start of the session.
