Music Award Show Photography Guide
Music award shows combine red carpet glamour, live performances, and emotional award moments. Capturing all three requires preparation, positioning, and speed.
Music Award Show Photography Overview
Music award shows are among the most high-stakes events in entertainment photography. The combination of celebrity arrivals, live performances, and emotional award presentations — all under broadcast lighting and time pressure — requires a photographer with substantial experience in entertainment and event photography.
Red Carpet Coverage
Red carpet photography at music award shows requires a designated press position and advance credentials. Arrive early to claim your position and understand the flow of artists. Use a 70–200mm lens from your fixed position and a 24–70mm if you have roaming access. Capture clean full-length and portrait shots of every major artist.
Music Award Show Shot List
- Red carpet arrivals — full body and portrait framing
- Pre-show interviews and media interactions
- Backstage warmup and preparation (if access granted)
- Performances from the press pit
- Award presentation and winner reaction
- Winner acceptance speech at the podium
- Post-award winner photo with award
- Audience reactions throughout
- After-party arrivals and candids
Working Under Broadcast Lighting
Award show broadcast lighting is designed for cameras, not stills photographers. The trade-off: excellent exposure for stage shots, but harsh hard light for candid moments. Use your exposure compensation to protect highlights on the stage and recover shadow detail in post. Shoot in RAW without exception.
