Model Headshot Guide: Professional Photos That Get You Signed and Booked

Model headshots — also called digitals or polaroids — are the foundation of your modeling portfolio. Getting them right is the first step toward agency representation and booking work.

What Are Model Headshots (Digitals)?

In the modeling industry, "headshots" refer to a range of essential photos that agencies and clients use to evaluate models before committing to a booking. These include a straight-on headshot, a profile shot, a half-body, and a full-body image — often called "digitals" or "comp card photos." These images prioritize accuracy over artistry: agencies want to see your actual features, body proportions, and natural look clearly and honestly.

For editorial and commercial modeling, a more styled, artistically executed professional headshot is also essential — showing your ability to model effectively, take direction, and convey different expressions and moods.

The Two Types of Model Headshots

Agency digitals: Clean, minimal, natural. Usually shot against a white background in simple attire (form-fitting solid color or swimwear). Minimal makeup. The goal is to document your natural features accurately. Hair down and loose for women's face shots; pulled back for some body shots. These are functional, not artistic.

Portfolio headshots: More editorial and styled. Demonstrates your ability to model — to take direction, convey character, and create compelling images. These are the shots that go on your comp card and portfolio for booking presentations.

Preparing for Model Headshots

For digitals: no heavy makeup, natural hair, clean skin. Bring 2–3 solid color, form-fitting tops or dresses. Ensure your brows, skin, and nails are groomed. Rest well — any puffiness or dark circles show clearly in accurate documenting photos.

For portfolio shots: work with your agent (if you have one) on styling direction. Bring versatile, high-quality wardrobe options. If you don't have agent representation yet, research the market and brands you aspire to book and bring attire that positions you in that direction.
