Before the Shoot: Preparation Dos and Don'ts

Do book a photographer who specializes in headshots. Wedding photographers, event photographers, and portrait generalists produce different results than someone who shoots corporate portraits daily. A specialist headshot photographer knows exactly how to light, pose, and direct you for professional results.

Do research your photographer's portfolio before booking. Look at their existing headshots — are the images sharp? Are the skin tones natural? Do the subjects look comfortable and genuine? If their portfolio matches the look you want, they're likely a good fit.

Don't book at the last minute before an important event. Schedule your session at least 2 weeks before you need the images, to allow time for selection, editing, and delivery.

Don't get a dramatic new haircut or color the day before. Give your hair 3–5 days to settle after a cut, and a week after coloring to let any brassiness calm down.

• Do wear solid colors — they photograph cleanest and keep focus on your face

• Don't wear brand new clothes that you haven't broken in — stiffness affects posture

Do communicate with your photographer throughout. Tell them which expressions feel natural and which feel forced. If a pose feels awkward, say so — they can adjust.

Do practice expressions in a mirror beforehand. Understand the difference between how you feel inside (nervous, forced) and how you actually look — often more natural than you think.

Don't stare directly into the lens without occasional breaks — extended staring creates tension in the eyes. Your photographer will direct you, but it's good to know this.

Don't rush. The best shots often come in the last 15 minutes of a session when you've relaxed. Don't watch the clock.
