Getting Ready Wedding Photos: A Complete Checklist

The getting-ready portion of the wedding day — the few hours before the ceremony when bride, groom, and wedding party prepare — contains some of the most intimate and emotionally rich photography of the entire wedding. But these moments are perishable and chaotic. A clear checklist ensures nothing important is missed.

Dress and Attire Details

Wedding dress on a hanger: Hung against a window, door, or architectural element before anyone puts it on. Close-up of embellishments: Lace, beading, buttons, or unique design details. Shoes: Styled with the bouquet or dress on a clean, neutral surface. Suit or tuxedo: Hanging or flat-laid alongside tie, boutonniere, and cufflinks.

Jewelry and Accessories

Engagement and wedding rings: Styled together on a meaningful object (invitation, flower petal, watch crystal). Earrings, necklace, bracelet: Laid flat on a neutral surface or box. Heirloom pieces: Photographed with the family context that makes them meaningful (next to the grandmother's photo, etc.).

Stationery and Printed Details

Wedding invitation suite: Styled flat-lay with envelope, liner, and stamps. Vow books: Photographed closed and open. Menu cards, escort cards, programs: Captured before guests arrive at the tables.

The Getting-Ready Room

Request a clean, well-lit getting-ready space. Ideally: a room with large natural light windows, neutral walls, minimal clutter, and space for the photographer to work at arm's length. Remove suitcases, food containers, and personal items from the background before photography begins. A messy getting-ready room is the most common source of unusable getting-ready images.
